Opportunity Snapshot

In this role you will have the opportunity not only to gain deep insight into the dynamics of our organization, but also to interact directly with many of our key decision makers, including the CFO and members of the Board of Trustees. This is largely a project-driven position offering a good deal of variety and the chance to showcase your creativity. You'll have the satisfaction of contributing to the St. Margaret Episcopal School (SMES) mission: to educate the hearts and minds of young people for lives of learning, leadership and service. We have cultivated a positive and collaborative environment, and people enjoy coming to work here each day.

You will ensure we have the strategic and operational data and analyses we need to make informed decisions in running a $25 million operation, contributing to a diverse array of projects. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have solid experience in financial analysis, including managing complex models. We're looking for a professional who truly enjoys digging into the numbers, but who also is able to envision how those numbers impact our students, families, and staff in the real world. In addition you'll need strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to prepare and present reports to senior management.

Founded in 1979, St. Margaret's is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school serving students in preschool through grade twelve. We have four schools (preschool, elementary, middle and high) on a single campus.  You may be surprised at the complexity and sophistication of our organization. As an independent school we handle ALL aspects of the education process -- everything from buses to lunches to building maintenance and much more -- making us more like a school district than an individual school.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:

What's in It for You

Broad exposure -- we're a smaller organization (about 220 people total) and that means no one is insulated. Yes, you will spend a fair part of your time focusing on the numbers, but you'll also interact extensively with people throughout SMES, and provide valuable insights about almost all aspects of our operation. If you are inclined, you might get involved in other areas of the school, such as coaching a sports team or volunteering for an outreach program.

High impact -- you will contribute to three of the nine key areas of our multi-year strategic plan, including maintaining and improving the school's facilities, financial management, and developing our performance and quality benchmarking processes. For more information about SMES and the strategic plan, please visit www.SMES.org. Clicking on this link will open a new browser window, but be sure to come back to submit your resume!

Great work environment -- because we all interact with students every day, we take care to model the behavior we expect of them: mutual respect, no politics, and working together toward common goals. Even if you already have non-profit experience, you will be impressed at how St. Margaret's weaves students, parents, faculty, and benefactors together into a richly textured community. That is just one of many reasons we have a number of long-tenured employees.

Professional development -- you'll engage in diverse projects and activities, learning more in one year in this role than you might in three years in roles at this level in other organizations, including the private sector.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes all you would expect plus some nice surprises. For example, we offer a 403(b) retirement plan and contribute 5% of each employee's salary, whether they contribute or not. If they do contribute, we match up to 4% of that contribution, for a total of 9% additional pre-tax income. In addition, if you have children and they are qualified for admission to SMES (there is, however, a waiting list for many grades), you can receive a significant discount on tuition.

More About Your Role

While you will report to the Accounting Manager, you also will take direction from the CFO. Many of your projects will go directly to the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees, so they, too, will influence your to-do list. This is an individual contributor role at the management level, as you will manage the strategic and operational data analysis functions of SMES.

You'll divide your time between ongoing activities and special projects. Ongoing activities will include managing our ten-year strategic planning model, constantly updating and refining it, and coordinating preparation of the annual budget. Special projects may cover a wide variety of areas, but to give you examples, here are some upcoming ones: In addition, your activities will include:

Who We Are

Just three miles from the Pacific Ocean amid gentle rolling hills, the campus of St. Margaret's Episcopal School is nestled in the heart of lovely, historic San Juan Capistrano. The school opened its doors in 1979 to seventy-nine students who attended kindergarten through grade six in temporary structures. Today we have more than 1200 students in programs ranging from pre-school to high school on an extensive campus. About half of our 100+ faculty members hold Master's Degrees and several have doctoral degrees. 100% of our high school graduates go on to four-year colleges.

St. Margaret's is fully accredited by the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Our Early Childhood Developmental Center is fully accredited with the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). In addition, the school is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES).
